The Impossible Dream

The Impossible Dream

Seven years ago we all sat around a beer soaked table on a Sunday night after a weekend of dancing like fools in some of the best Indie clubs London has. Impersonating Ian Curtis and Bez on the dance floor. Feeling worse for wear but floating on that wonderful buzz one can only experience after seriously pushing yourself to the max.

A few of the lads began talking ‘shop’ and by shop I mean ‘the band’, a band that had been in the making for years and was still having teething problems. I loved those weekends but they were always tarnished by their talk of imaginery success. My sister and I had real lives to go back to on the Monday; university, jobs etc. However the lads were still unqualified 20 somethings without jobs or prospects, getting by on Tesco discount vouchers. All they had was this ridiculous pipe dream.

To start with the talk of this impossible dream wasn’t anything different then a child wanting to be a football player when he grows up. We humoured them, encouraged them even. However the dream became like a parasite and would eat up their lives. They were always depressed, or arguing, there was always someone to blame for a bad gig or the missed opportunity of a signing. Eventually my sister and I moved on, hoping they might to.

We kept in contact with quarterly updates on love lives, families and band changes. A few tracks and a few gigs were enjoyed but mostly they were still pining after this unattainable goal. We thought they were so foolish…little did we know.

One night they were playing a gig in Islington London under the name The Ex-Lion Tamers and they were spotted. Finally someone else saw in them what they saw in themselves. Since that wonderful night they have done nothing but work on the band. They have recently finished a back to back tour of Europe, played most of the big festivals and have released a single. They are also now earning from their impossible dream and my sister and I are eating a lot of humble pie.
